Can you spot the subwoofer in this picture? If Magnepan has
its way, you never will.
One of the issues that the company has been wrestling with is how to help owners of its
speakers visually blend into the rooms in which they are used. Over the course of a few
shows, Magnepan has demonstrated its on-wall mounting system, which puts the company's smaller panel
speakers in attractive frames with mechanisms that swing the speakers into place.
Next, Magnepan set its sights on doing the same
thing with a subwoofer, but one that would integrate with the speed of its ribbon midrange
drivers and tweeters. The solution is called "the Maggie Woofer" for now. It's a
planar-magnetic woofer that connects to an existing system via an external crossover,
adding bass depth to panel speakers and also matching their speed. To our ears, the
concept worked, producing sound that was clearly more weighty than that of the speakers
alone, but without the plodding thickness of many inexpensive subwoofers.
While Magnepan doesn't want you to see "the Maggie
Woofer," we do. Here it
is. [www.magnepan.com]
