Standout Room: Paradigm Reference

Well, if home theater it's to be, than let's thank people like Paradigm Reference for bringing us affordable gear with high-quality sound in mind. The Paradigm Reference Active System was an interesting concept in economics. While the complete in-room system was valued at approximately $90,000, the speakers totaled $7,265, or only 8.5% of the system cost. Now this wouldn't be such a big deal if there weren't more to this than just speakers. The asking price includes the amplifiers inside the speakers and 23' of interconnect for each. No speaker cables required!

The lineup for the show system was the Active/450-LR front speakers ($1,850 per pair), and one for the center ($925). Rear surrounds were the model Active/450-ADP ($1,850 per pair) placed at the side walls. A pair of Reference Servo-15 subwoofers ($1,500 for the first, and $1,340 for additional units) provided supreme bottom-end pumpage, and have internal 400-watt amps that can be remotely operated by the X-30 controller.

Music was demonstrated quite nicely in a two-channel and full home-theater setup using a Krell Audio+Video Standard preamp/processor, Sonic Frontiers Transport 3, Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player, Ampro MX 5000 "Alice" DLP projector, Stewart Filmscreens screen, Premier speaker stands and audio-video furniture, VansEvers power-line conditioners, ASC Tower Cube Traps and Flutter Stix. AudioStream A-600 and Straightwire balanced interconnects were also in use. Bravo to Paradigm Reference for remembering that most of the world can't afford the esoteric, and for proving that consumers don’t have to compromise sound quality for strictly financial reasons.
