The Best in Online Trade Show Reporting June 10, 1998Sony Electronics Press Conferenceby Doug Blackburn, Dave Duvall, Doug Schneider This morning, Sony unveiled an array of interesting new audio and home-theater products. The new digital projection sets, 53" and 61" XBR series, include digital technology that enhances the resolution of any input signal so that it is displayed at 960 interlaced scan lines with 1440-pixel horizontal resolution (full HDTV resolution is 1080 x 1920, and standard NTSC resolution is roughly equivalent to 480 x 720). Additional processing power is applied to PIP and multi-window features so that all features and variable sizing and positioning are available for all displayed windows. The new Sony projection sets had excellent imaging capabilities. Sony also announced a new line of flat-screen XBR monitors. The KV-32XBR200 is shown with SoundStage! publisher Doug Schneider. The direct-view flat tubes are a major element in these analog NTSC television monitors. The video demo on these sets from DVD was exceptional, with very liquid-looking and three-dimensional images. A 36" model is also available. Prices for the two models are $2099 and $2499 respectively. Pictured to the left is the new Sony flat HDTV (first shown at CES '98 in Las Vegas), a full-digital direct-view wide-screen set using a version of the new Sony flat tube. And finally, videophiles will be ecstatic to find out that Sony has a new reference DVD player coming to the market. Sony announced the DVP-S7700, which will replace the current flagship Sony DVD player. The new DVP-S7700 (shown below) employs a full range of features including DVD DTS compatibility, 24-bit/96kHz DACs, and faster transport response.
