If you're saying to yourself, "That looks
like one big LCD monitor," you're correct -- it's the biggest available today.
Sharp's LB-1085 measures 108" diagonally. It costs $150,000 and weighs 430 pounds.
But this is no "for show only" product. A Sharp representative said that the
company has already sold a few of them.
Sony hasn't given up on SACD just yet. The new
SCD-XA5400ES ($1499) has both single-ended and balanced stereo analog outputs and an HDMI
output for multichannel use. This player can also output the DSD datastream via HDMI, and three
new Sony receivers can decode it.
Logitech's Squeezebox Boom ($299) is a radio
with a twist. It is essentially a Squeezebox with amplification and speakers, so you can
take it anywhere in range of your WiFi network and stream music to it. It has
user-definable presets that allow quick access to various programming.
A more traditional digital product is the
Meridian 808.2 CD player, the upgraded version of the company's well-known flagship. The
new player shares only the older one's chassis -- everything inside is different. The
808.2 is said to eliminate "pre-echo," a CD mastering error. Two versions are
available -- with ($16,995) and without ($15,995) preamp functionality.
Also new from Meridian is DSP7200 ($34,995 per
pair), the company's latest digital speaker, which a company representative told us is
selling faster than Meridian can make them. The matching
7200HC center-channel speaker costs $19,995.
Another extreme speaker is the Aerial 20T v2
($32,000 per pair), which uses new woofers and crossovers from those for the original
version of the speaker. Owners of the 20T can upgrade for $6000.
